Col di Frena itinerary
The starting point is the parking area by the Tabià restaurant, in the hamlet of Feder (46.376516483127716, 11.895626751810735), a welcoming little village overlooked by the peaks of the cime d’Auta. The first stop on the route is the Museo Latteria di Feder, located at Via Pavier, 3. The museum trail is set up in a dairy from the second half of the 19th century, where numerous tools used to produce dairy products according to traditional methods are on display.
Continue along Via Pavier heading southeast for 750 metres, cross a clear stream and go downhill along the asphalt road in the shade of a conifer forest. At the junction, turn left toward Fregona, a charming settlement at the foot of Col di Frena (1250 m a.s.l.) not to be confused with the municipality of Fregona in the province of Treviso, a sought-after destination for hiking enthusiasts eager to explore the fascinating Parco Grotte del Caglieron.
Walk through the village dotted with centuries-old barns, known as tabià, and characteristic wooden and stone homes that surround a white church and a pretty fountain. Of note is the Caselo de Fargona, a dairy that represents the productive realities tied to the area’s agriculture, livestock farming and gastronomy.
Following the main road, a short distance from the Caselo de Fregona you will find the trail signs for Carfon, a picturesque little village resting on the bright grassy slope crossed by low stone walls. In the heart of the village there is an 18th-century church, from whose privileged position you can admire the wooded bulk of Cima Pape. At the southern edge of the village stands the Caselo di Carfon, also converted into a museum.
From the settlement of Carfon head northeast toward Toffol, where the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Maria di Lourdes is located (Frazione Toffol, 17). From here continue east along a stretch of provincial road 15. At the intersection, follow the signs for Andrich and pass alongside the Chiesa di San Giuseppe. At the stop sign turn left, then take the side road on your left toward località Piaz.
The settlement of Cogul
After 700 metres, turn left to reach Cogul, a welcoming mountain village framed to the east by Piz Croce, to the west by Col di Frena, to the south by Cima Pape, and to the north by the imposing group of the Cime Auta.
Set in a green meadowland, the village nestled among the mountains is dotted with old stone and wooden houses adorned with flowers, centuries-old cart wheels and sculptures that decorate well-tended gardens.
The route continues west, venturing into the lush forest crossed by icy streams toward Forcella Lagazzon. Shortly after passing Rifugio l’Agazon, take the path on your right that leads into the dense conifer vegetation covering a green rise. The trail returns to the hamlet of Feder.
If you’re wondering what to do in Vallada Agordina, this pleasant itinerary is perfect for those who want to discover secluded places, untouched by mass tourism, whose extraordinary scenic, historical and cultural value is tied to the ancient traditions that shepherds, farmers and artisans have managed to pass down and enhance over the centuries.
