Malga Luna and Rifugio Scarpa
The starting point of the itinerary is Piazza Don Stefano Gorzegno. Alternatively, you can leave your car in front of the church of San Nicolò, or in the nearby parking area reached by taking the side street a little further south from the place of worship, at Alpenlegno, in Via Villa, 12. (46.25284719694733, 11.984151017264962).
Leaving the façade of the parish church behind you, head north along Viale della Vittoria for about 200 meters, then turn left into Via Vich, as indicated by a yellow sign showing the direction to Rifugio Scarpa (an hour and a half on foot), Malga Losch (CAI 771), the Stella Alpina via ferrata and Malga Luna. Follow the cobblestone road framed by picturesque mountain homes, then turn left and continue for about 650 meters on Via Domadore, as indicated by the signs for CAI trails 771 and 772.
To reach Malga Luna, follow the directions for CAI trail 772. This pleasant hiking route leads into a flourishing larch forest covering Col di Luna, overlooked to the west by the steep snow-capped peaks of Croda Granda and Cima d’Angheràz.
After crossing a small wooden bridge over a clear stream, at the fork keep right and continue along the dirt path (CAI 772). The walk winds through dense tree vegetation that shades lush ferns and moss-covered rocks brushed by icy little streams.
The route crosses the bright meadow area where Mason De Pianézze stands, a charming stone-and-wood refuge wrapped in greenery and silence. The mule track, rather steep, tackles the slope until it reaches Malga Luna refuge.
Col di Luna
Follow the trail that passes behind the Malga Luna refuge, alongside a wooden crucifix, to reach a fork in about ten minutes. Keep left towards Col di Luna, on whose summit stands a tall iron cross. Speckled in spring and summer with buttercups, daisies and dandelions, the top of the hill offers breathtaking views of the Pale di San Martino.
From this commanding position, the view embraces the settlements of Gosaldo, Forcella Aurine, Frassene, Voltago Agordino and further on to Agordo, framed by Monte Agner, Moiazza, the Tamer-S.Sebastiano Group and the Monti del Sole.
After admiring the extraordinary panorama, retrace your steps to the fork and follow the signs for Rifugio Scarpa. The route winds between beech and conifer trees until it reaches the Malga Losch bivouac, at 1720 m above sea level, and Rifugio Scarpa, which from its 1735 meters of elevation offers an exciting view of the dizzying slopes of Moiazza, Agner, Croda Granda and the San Sebastiano group standing out on the horizon.
To return to the starting point, the quickest and easiest way is CAI trail 771, a pleasant route that runs alongside the chairlift. The trail descends the hill passing through the Rafadora picnic area, where you will find a wooden crucifix, a table, a bench and a fountain carved from a log.
