Where is Canale d’Agordo?
The municipality of Canale d’Agordo borders north on Rocca Pietore, south on Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, east on Vallada Agordina, Cencenighe Agordino and Taibon Agordino, and west on Falcade and Primiero San Martino di Castrozza.
Giovanni Paolo I Bivouac Hut
The starting point of the hike is the parking area at Colmean (coordinates: 46.37756782534322, 11.890597536682323). Located at 1,274 meters above sea level, the welcoming little village of Valle del Bois rests on a bright grassy slope surrounded by fir forests. From here, the view stretches to the nearby settlements of Feder, Tegosa and Caviola, all the way to the peaks of Cima Pape, Cima Mulaz, Cima di Campido and Cima del Focobon, which stand out majestically on the horizon.
Shaded by conifers and flanked by stacks of logs, at the start of the trail there is a charming wooden hut, where a sign invites us to respect the environment by keeping it clean.
We follow trail no. 689 in the direction of the Hunters’ Hut. The winding path enters the woods, dotted with moss-covered rocks brushed by a clear stream. In the autumn and winter months, the luckiest observers may spot several species of mushrooms and beautiful saffron flowers.
Along the way, it is easy to be enchanted by the sight of the mighty snow-covered mass of the Pale di San Martino and the Cime d’Auta, rising to 2,623 meters above sea level.
The Hunters’ Hut
The mountain refuge blends harmoniously at the foot of the Cime D’Auta at 1,751 meters above sea level, in a panoramic position of rare beauty. An ideal destination for mountaineering and photography enthusiasts, the Hunters’ Hut includes a large terrace from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pale di San Martino and Passo San Pellegrino, a landmark for skiers coming from all over Europe.
Pope John Paul I Hut
At this point, you tackle the final 114 meters of elevation gain that separate us from the Pope John Paul I hut. Located at 1,865 meters above sea level, the alpine shelter bears above the entrance a plaque with the inscription: “Friend, this is a corner of paradise, enjoy it and defend it as if it were your own!”.
The spacious refuge includes two long wooden tables, a small stove and a stone fireplace (above which a hook is suspended for hanging a pot), around which a semicircular wooden bench is arranged. In one corner there are an axe, a saw, a shovel and other tools for cleaning. A ladder leads up to the loft.
