The parish of San Michele Arcangelo
Located in Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria, 27, the white mass of the neoclassical place of worship stands out in the historic heart of Bagnoli.
An elegant dentilled frame divides the majestic facade into two superimposed orders. The lower register is rhythmically marked by six Ionic pilasters resting on high bases, two at the ends of the front, the other four, arranged in pairs, frame the access portal.
The massive wooden portal is flanked by four quadrangular windows (those at the bottom taller) aligned vertically. Adorned by a sinuous geometric iron motif, the lunette window crowning the door is surmounted by an archivolt, decorated, at the keystone, with a grotesque mask.
The molded band separating the two registers serves as a frame for a large curved pediment, also dentilled, which stands at the center of the front above the two pairs of Ionic pilasters.
The top of the pediment is interrupted by a round-arched single lancet window that dominates the center of the upper register. Enhanced by a white Serlian window, the arched opening is flanked by six Corinthian pilasters in line with those below.
Completing the vertical development of the structure is the triangular pediment, embellished with two spires and bearing at the center of the tympanum a clock with Roman numerals.
If you wonder what to do in Bagnoli di Sopra, the church of San Michele Arcangelo houses refined altars in polychrome marbles adorned with sculptures of flying cherubs, extraordinary pictorial works, and a brilliant gilded coffered ceiling.
