Villa Arca del Santo
Located at Via Santo, 18, Villa Arca del Santo is one of the most fascinating monuments in the municipality of Anguillara Veneta. Elegantly integrated into a large tree-lined park framed by tall cypress poplars, the original 15th-century architectural complex consists of a two-story rectangular central body, built a short distance from the peaceful course of the Gorzone.
The south facade is embellished on the piano nobile by a loggia with a balustraded three-light window, surmounted by a triangular tympanum. The other facade also has a three-light opening with a parapet on the first floor, but without a tympanum.
Designed to give the friars of the Veneranda Arca di Sant’Antonio a place to work and administer the agricultural holdings of the Basilica del Santo in Padua in Anguillara Veneta, the manor house is flanked by two oratories, of which the right one has a bell tower.
The church of Sant’Andrea
Located in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, 23, the imposing red-brick mass of the neo-Gothic church is distinguished by a majestic double-pitched facade. The front is rhythmically divided by four pilasters connected by a motif of hanging arches that follow the roof slopes.
Set in a frame delimited by two columns, the massive wooden portal is surmounted by a lunette, depicting the saint on a gold background, enclosed by a double-arched arch. Above the wooden portal stands a graceful rose window with twelve rays.
In the lateral sections of the facade, in the area between the rose window and the entrance portal, two tall and narrow single-light windows open, lightening the imposing structure crowned by three white statues.
Certainly noteworthy is the bell tower soaring alongside the parish church, culminating in a sharp spire.
If you are wondering what to do in Anguillara Veneta, the church of Sant’Andrea houses a spectacular heritage of invaluable paintings and sculptures, including a 17th-century altarpiece and an altar attributed to Antonio Bonazza, a Paduan sculptor who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries.
