What to do in Val di Zoldo? Hike to Rifugio Giovanni Angelini
The starting point of the itinerary is in Baron, a charming village of Forno di Zoldo dominated by the majestic snow-covered peaks of Spiz di Mezzodì and Monte Tamer. Looking west, the delightful mountain settlement offers striking panoramic views of Monte Civetta.
We can leave the car in the parking area in Piazza Cav. Uff. Apollonio Santin, 6. After crossing the bridge over Rio Jordao, keep left onto Via Pramper. After about 250 metres, cross the bridge over the stream of the same name and keep left, then continue towards Baron.
The initial climb and the undergrowth flora
After about eighty metres, on our right we find the trail signs for path 534 (46.34403178826088, 12.178167032360824). The route leads into the dense vegetation of a lush forest extending along the edge of a bright grassy expanse, dotted in spring and summer with vivid floral species, from daisies to buttercups, from clovers to common valerian.
From Casera di Mezzodì to Rifugio Angelini Sopra l’ Sass
The trail winds its way in the shade of beeches and conifers, whose canopies shelter the lush undergrowth dotted with ferns and crossed by clear little streams bubbling among moss-covered rocks. A recommended activity for hiking enthusiasts wondering what to do in Val di Zoldo, this pleasant walk is ideal for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in a fairytale atmosphere suspended in time, where the deep silence seems broken only by the murmur of lively brooks and the distant echo of cowbells from grazing cattle.
The first part of the route includes a rather demanding climb which, from the starting elevation of 851 metres, reaches an altitude of 1,240 metres a.s.l. in about an hour and a quarter of walking. The gradient then eases and, after a height difference of about one hundred metres, the trail leads in about half an hour to Casera de Mezodì. Located at 1349 metres a.s.l., the welcoming alpine shelter blends harmoniously into a pleasant flower-filled meadow overlooked by the steep rocky walls of Spiz di Mezzodì Nord, whose summit rises to 2317 metres a.s.l.
After the stop at the hut, we resume the route along CAI 534, which once again heads into the conifer forest. The effort of the walk is more than rewarded by the extraordinary views of Monte Pelmo, the Bosconero group, Monte Civetta and the Spiz di Mezzodì, which can be admired from the viewpoint.
Located at 1680 metres a.s.l., Rifugio Angelini is a welcoming structure wrapped by the plateau of the Spiz di Mezzodì, from whose privileged position there is a breathtaking view of the Pale di San Sebastiano.
On the way back
To complete the loop, we turn onto CAI trail 525. The final stretch of the itinerary descends the green slope covered with pines and larches, crosses some charming little wooden bridges, one of which leads to Sant’Antonio, just a short walk from the starting point.
