Church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo
Set in the historic heart of the rural village of the upper area of Padova, the solemn structure of the church recalls that of an ancient Greek temple.
Located in Via Chiesa Tombolo, 2, the place of worship is accessible through a massive pedimented portal preceded by an imposing pronaos marked by four Ionic columns supporting the entablature, frieze and triangular dentilled pediment, embellished by a fresco depicting Sant’Andrea, surrounded by angels, holding the heavy X-shaped cross on which he was martyred.
Enclosed by a large round arch, the same scene is repeated above the wooden doorway. Portrayed in a blue and red robe, the saint apostle is wrapped in luminous, puffy clouds that almost completely hide the sky, of which a sliver can be seen at the bottom left. The chiaroscuro contrasts of the clouds create an evocative perspectival view animated by little angels holding the cross of Sant’Andrea.
If you’re wondering what to do in Tombolo, the enchanting place of worship houses a splendid pipe organ and altars in finely crafted polychrome marble.
Villa Cittadella Giusti
Located in Via Sen. G. Cittadella, the ruins of the noble estate are surrounded by a dense curtain of vegetation made up of poplars, acacias and field maples entwined with a compact row of wild bamboo canes that appear impenetrable.
Covered by a thick layer of ivy that infests its surface up to the swallowtail battlements, the access arch is partly hidden by lush privets, oleanders, majestic cedars and graceful specimens of paper mulberry (broussonetia papyrifera).
Like an enchanted castle protected by two massive towers, the heart of the noble remains is flanked by elegant rustic arcaded outbuildings.
The Onara marsh park
Located in the namesake hamlet of Tombolo, the enchanting oasis is accessible via an avenue of towering cypresses near the oratory of Santa Margherita, a lovely building dating back to about nine hundred years ago, harmoniously set in a small well-kept lawn in Via degli Ezzelini, 7.
The natural site is crossed by winding wooden walkways from which it is possible to admire the lush tree and shrub vegetation, including varieties of plane trees, hawthorns, plane trees, willows, alders and a thriving cover of horsetails, rushes and reeds brushed by the clear bubbling springs of the Tergola river. From the crystalline surface of the springs, thick bright tufts of water crowfoot can be seen, slowly moved by icy currents.
