Roman Villa
Located at Via Villa, 6, the glorious remains of a splendid rustic residence from the imperial age represent one of the most significant historical, artistic and cultural landmarks of the region.
Following the discovery of the first archaeological evidence of the Roman domus in the second half of the 19th century, a series of excavation campaigns conducted in the 20th century brought to light an invaluable mosaic floor that adorned a porticoed area.
The mosaic work is punctuated by geometric motifs framing faunal representations, among which a deer or ibex and various birds can be recognized, including some pheasants, a bird of prey, perhaps a kite or a partridge, and a dove eating a fruit. Sinuous geometric patterns envelop the millenary face of a lady with a melancholic expression, portrayed in elegant clothes, jewels and diadems. Inside a circular frame stands a bearded male figure with long hair.
