The cathedral of Enego
Where is the cathedral of Enego?
The church of Santa Giustina Vergine e Martire is located at Via Chiesa, 9, 36052 Enego (VI).
Arranged neatly on a steep rocky relief that rises in the urban heart of the village dotted with tall white buildings with wooden terraces and parapets, twenty-seven wide steps bordered by an elegant balustrade branch into two stairways: the one on the right, cobbled and flanked by a low stone block wall, the one on the left, in white stone, leading to the austere bulk of the church of Santa Giustina Vergine e Martire.
Built on the foundations of a thousand-year-old Roman temple, on whose remains Christian places of worship had been constructed, devoured by flames in the 17th and 18th centuries, the cathedral of Enego stands out for its imposing façade articulated by two pairs of Corinthian half-columns resting on high bases that separate the central part of the front, culminating in a triangular tympanum adorned with a dentil motif, from the lateral sections, marked by pilasters framing semicircular niches containing precious statues.
Accessible through a massive wooden arched door framed by half-columns supporting the architrave and semi-circular pediment, the interior of the church is organized into three naves and houses a spectacular pictorial work by Jacopo Bassano from the 16th century.
The Scaliger tower
One of the most significant monuments of the municipality of Enego, the massive stone tower was built by order of the leader Cangrande della Scala in the first half of the 14th century. Rising at Piazza San Marco, from which stands the commemorative stele of the fallen of the Great War surmounted by the statue of a soldier holding the tricolor, the soaring medieval building is topped with corbels that support the slightly projecting top of the structure, in which the coat of arms of the powerful Veronese dynasty is set.
The Valdicina cave
In addition to the grandiose monuments that attest to the value of the artistic and architectural heritage of Enego, this splendid municipality of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni offers spectacular natural destinations, rare and uncontaminated, set in the mountains.
To reach the village of Valdicina leave Piazza San Marco and the Scaliger tower on your left and head south via Via Murialdo, then proceed along Via Valdifabbro di Quà and keeping right, go onto Via Coste di Quà. Follow Via Coste di Quà for 1.3 km, then continue on Via Coste di Là, entering the enchanting scenery of the Altipiano di Asiago until you reach the hamlet of the Valdicina district perched on the mountain slope where the thick vegetation of fir trees rises.
The icy karst stream emerges from the cavity of a steep rock wall in which quadrangular stone basins have been carved, from which the clear and clean water necessary for the local population was drawn.
Fort Lisser
Starting from the pleasant locality of Tombal, the solemn bulk of the 20th-century fortress can be reached via the serene CAI 865 itinerary, from which you can enjoy a spectacular wide-ranging view of the pre-Alpine peaks of Vicenza draped in forests.
Built a few years before the Great War, the imposing structure constituted a barrier along the border with the valleys of the Brenta and the Cismon stream, its tributary, to repel the advance of the Austro-Hungarian army.
The mighty fortification dominates unchallenged on the summit of the homonymous mount at the eastern extremity of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain reliefs.
If you are wondering what to do in Enego and want to explore one of the most representative historical landmarks in the province of Vicenza, where the rigorous geometries of military architecture harmonize with the rugged reliefs of the majestic Vicenza mountain range, a visit to Fort Lisser will be a memorable experience!
The Marcesina plain
Located at 1,400 meters above sea level on the border between eastern Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, the vast plateau is a boundless natural area characterized by a fascinating glacial environment featuring endless bright pastures and dense, silent forest formations dotted with giant firs with heavy, pungent branches.
Betraying human presence in a healthy and seemingly primordial environment are ancient wooden casoni that once offered shelter from the harsh temperatures.
For hiking enthusiasts looking for a fairytale and peaceful atmosphere immersed in greenery where time seems to have stood still, the Marcesina plain is certainly a recommended destination!
