Bike Ride in Dolcè
The starting point of the itinerary is the parking lot on Via Trento (45.599289838874945, 10.85300673165743). Head west for 240 meters, passing under the underpass of state road 12 and the railway line, then turn left onto the bike path. Proceed south for 1.1 km along the asphalted pedestrian and cycle path surrounded by vineyards and lush hedges of acacias and birches, cross the railway underpass, and continue for 280 meters among lush vineyards until you reach the intersection with the provincial road.
Proceed south for 2.6 km along the provincial road shaded by poplars, elms, ash trees, hornbeams, and many other tall trees. The road is bordered to the east by the steep walls of a white hill covered in ivy and crowned by a dense mantle of tree vegetation.
Keep right on Via Rovereto and proceed for 350 meters until you reach the church of San Nicolò in the center of Ceraino, then turn left onto Via Fontana. Cross the road and take path 240 towards Forte di Monte, Pastello, and Corno d’Aquilio.
The steep path leads to Forte Ceraino, an Austrian military complex from whose privileged position you can overlook the extraordinary agricultural landscape of Dolcè, marked by sun-drenched vineyards, crossed by the sinuous course of the Adige River, and dominated by the grand mass of the southern foothills of the Lessini Mountains.
The route deviates south and leads, through a series of hairpin bends, to the Forte Mollinary di Monte. After the visit, follow path 240 towards Corno d’Aquilio. At this point, the path winds north along the ridge of Monte Pastello, offering spectacular landscape views.
Just before Forte Masua (45.593340411390216, 10.87807177704049), keep left and resume the panoramic route that descends the wooded slope of the mountain and emerges onto Via Volta (45.60023026315847, 10.855407900117468). At the intersection, turn left and proceed for about 200 meters along Via Saline and Via Castello until you return to the starting point.
The Church of San Nicolò
Located on Via Fontana in the hamlet of Ceraino, the church of San Nicolò is distinguished by a simple double-pitched facade featuring an elegant rose window adorned with stained glass. Surrounded by mulberry trees and towering cypresses, the place of worship faces west towards Forte Rivoli – Wohlgemuth, an imposing defensive complex perched on the summit of a rocky relief of Monte Castello in the Adige narrows.
Accessible through a massive wooden portal, the bright and luminous church is internally embellished by a wooden truss ceiling.
If you are wondering what to do in Dolcè, the church of San Nicolò is one of the most fascinating spiritual and historical landmarks of the municipality.
