Hike from Pelos to the Romotoi Gorge
From the church of San Bernardino di Siena to the bridge over the Piova stream
The starting point of the route is Piazza S. Bernardino in Pelos, a hamlet of the municipality of Vigo di Cadore, opposite the Church of San Bernardino da Siena. Framed by charming renovated houses in wood and exposed stone, this 15th-century place of worship stands in the historic heart of the mountain village, from whose panoramic position, on clear days, you can enjoy evocative views of Col Vidal to the northwest, Monte Cridola and Montanel to the south, the Brentoni group in the Carnic Alps to the east, and the Marmarole to the west.
From the Mandre area to the Romotoi Gorge
From the Piazza we head southeast along Via Giuseppe Fabbro for about 750 meters, until, on our left, just before the Ponte sul Piova, we find path 358, which enters the dense conifer forest brushed by a winding crystal-clear watercourse.
This route is ideal for anyone who wants to discover what to do in Vigo di Cadore and wishes to immerse themselves in the magical atmosphere of ancient woods, carried along by the relaxing sound of icy streams flowing between the rocks. An experience that invites you to lose yourself in unspoiled nature, wrapped in the serenity and timeless beauty of a landscape that seems straight out of a dream.
Once you reach Località Mandre, you will find signs for the equipped route of the Romotoi Gorge. Over the course of millions of years, the relentless work of the stream of the same name has shaped the dizzying geometry of this deep ravine like a patient sculptor, its vertical walls towering above the stream gushing among stones and rocks smoothed by the water’s current.
Once at the gorge, a series of metal ropes, ladders and suspension bridges make it possible to tackle the climb among roaring waterfalls and moss-covered rocks. An ideal route for photography enthusiasts wondering what to do in Vigo di Cadore, the trail that crosses the Romotoi Gorge offers striking panoramic glimpses of this mysterious rocky corridor, from whose summit, on clear-sky days, the sun’s rays create a spectacle of light and shadow that will take your breath away.
After crossing the gorge, in Romotoi (1180 meters a.s.l.), keep left and continue northwest towards Costa (1126 meters a.s.l.), then descend the wooded slope following the CAI 338 signs until you reach Dumelle (1165 meters a.s.l.), where the trail winds once again along the Piova stream. At this point, leave trail CAI 338 and keep left to return to the Mandre area, from where you retrace your steps back to the starting point.
The hike is not without technical difficulties: particular attention is required along the route that enters the canyon, whose crossing requires via ferrata equipment.
