The church of San Lorenzo
Located in Piazza Prandina, 7, the church of San Lorenzo is one of the most significant cultural and architectural landmarks of the municipality.
Facing a pleasant green area dotted with maples, silver cedars, ash trees, cypresses and lindens, the neoclassical place of worship is accessible via a majestic tetrastyle pronaos of composite order (perhaps Corinthian) supporting the architrave, the frieze bearing the inscription DOMUS DEI in huge black capital letters, and the dentil triangular pediment surmounted by a metal Latin cross.
The imposing colonnade precedes the elegant façade vertically tripartite by two pairs of pilasters. Surmounted by a triangular tympanum, the massive wooden portal is flanked by two niches, also tympanum-shaped, containing statues of two saints.
Horizontally divided by a string course, the front is embellished in the upper register by an elegant rose window of polychrome glass whose rays, connected by round arches, create a striking geometric pattern reminiscent of flower petals.
On either side of the rose window stand depictions of two angels with gilded wings, one with a blue robe, the other with a red robe.
Surmounted by a pavilion roof with six mullioned windows, the single nave houses a spectacular collection of marble altars and paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
The transhumance festival
In 2022, the transhumance festival took place from Friday 23 to Friday 30 September.
On the occasion of the traditional event, during which the village of the upper Padua area welcomes the cows returning from mountain grazing, the main streets and squares of the town come alive with exhibitions of vintage tractors and agricultural machinery, artisan workshops illustrating and passing down the ancient crafts of our ancestors, livestock shows and numerous stalls full of genuine products that promote and define the cultural roots of a charming rural community immersed in the boundless plain of the upper Padua area, dotted with rustic farmhouses surrounded by cornfields and lush vineyards framed by flourishing hedges of willows, acacias, elms, poplars, alders, elderberries, plane trees and field maples that stretch to the horizon.
If you are wondering what to do in San Pietro in Gu, the transhumance festival is one of the most characteristic and engaging folk events of the municipality. To stay always updated on the program of the initiative, we invite you to consult the website comune.sanpietroingu.pd.it.
