Bike Ride in Taglio di Po
The starting point of the itinerary is Vicolo San Francesco, 1, at the church of San Francesco d’Assisi. Leave the facade of the place of worship on your right and head east on Via Pisani Vittor until the intersection with Via Romea. Turn right and proceed for 1 km along Via Romea. At the roundabout, take the second exit and continue south for 8.4 km along Via del Giubileo and Via Romea, crossing the villages of Piano and Rivà. The first part of the route enters the vast plain of Polesine dotted with farmhouses surrounded by corn and wheat fields.
Reach the top of the embankment, turn left and proceed for 12.7 km along the road that follows the winding course of the Po River on the border with Emilia-Romagna. From this perspective, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the interregional Po Delta Park.
Inscribed in the UNESCO heritage, the enchanting natural oasis covers an area of 54,000 hectares and extends between the provinces of Rovigo, Ferrara, and Ravenna. One of the largest wetlands in Europe, this extraordinary treasure trove of biodiversity includes vast forest formations covered with holm oaks, ash trees, white poplars, elms, downy oaks, hornbeams, and white willows, shady pine forests, brackish water areas covered with rough tamarisks, freshwater wetlands dotted with water lilies, and beaches marked by dunes covered with moss, sea medick, and junipers.
After exactly 12.7 km (44.88695324442687, 12.285662794132117), turn left onto the dirt road that leads into the serene rural landscape of Rovigo. Proceed east on Via Abruzzo until you reach Oca Marina. At the intersection with SP 66, cross the road and take Via Umbria. Keep left and proceed north for 6 km on the road that winds along the winding course of the Po della Donzella under the shade of towering poplar groves.
Descend the embankment (44.93590847590538, 12.315151551137058) and follow Via Trentino Alto Adige until the intersection with provincial road 66. Turn right and proceed for 2.4 km, then (after crossing the overpass) turn left. After 450 meters, keep right and follow provincial road 38 for 2.5 km. Cross the canal on your left and proceed southwest for 3 km, passing the ancient boundary marker between the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the Papal States (44.94697483482727, 12.260265200766755).
At the roundabout, take the second exit, turn left and proceed for 300 meters. At the intersection, turn right and follow Via Romea and Via del Giubileo for almost 8 km, then turn left onto Via Pisani Vittor to return to the starting point.
