Bike ride in Pontecchio Polesine, Guarda Veneta and Crespino
The starting point of the itinerary is the car park in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti. Proceed south to the intersection with Via Roma, turn right and follow Via Roma west for 350 metres, flanking the northern facade of Villa Cappello – Rama.
At the roundabout take the third exit and continue south along the cycle path in Via Guglielmo Marconi for about 4.5 km. The first section of the route enters the boundless plain of Polesine dotted with graceful rural homes framed by tree-lined gardens and characteristic rustic farmhouses surrounded by wheat fields.
Cross the centre of Guarda Veneta until you reach the staircase leading to the picnic area on the bank of the Po. Keep right to reach the top of the embankment, then turn left and proceed for almost 6.5 km along Via Giacomo Puccini and Via Passodoppio. From the privileged position of the embankment, you can embrace with your gaze the extraordinary river landscape of the Po and the lush riparian plants that cloak its banks.
The dense tangle of willows, cypress poplars, elms, elderberries, mulberries, alders and dense thickets of common reeds is contrasted by the regular succession of towering poplars that find in the fertile floodplain area the ideal environment to grow luxuriantly. Follow the panoramic route until you catch sight of the white oratory of Sant’Antonio da Padova. At this point keep left and descend the embankment along Via Sant’Antonio.
Keep right on Via Roma, then cross Piazza Fetonte and continue along Via Santissimi Massimo e Severo, flanking the west side of the majestic Baroque church of Saints Martin and Severus Bishops. At the intersection turn left and proceed for 300 metres, then keep left and head west for 650 metres.
At this point keep right towards San Cassiano. The road winds for 2.5 km between vast wheat and corn fields that surround ancient rustic farmhouses. Once you reach the hamlet of Banchina di Sopra, at the intersection with Via San Cassiano turn left and continue along Via San Cassiano for 550 metres, then turn left into Via Selva and proceed for almost 2 km entering the green countryside of the Rovigo area crossed by winding canals with grassy banks.
At the intersection turn right and continue on Via Selva for 2.3 km, then keep left on Via Roma and continue for 1.3 km to return to the starting point.
Villa Cappello now Rama
Located at Via Roma, 44, the stately complex consists of the residential core flanked by a majestic barchessa and a white oratory dedicated to Santa Maria della Salute.
Raised on two floors, the manor house is topped by a summit body crowned by a triangular pediment, in the centre of which stands a noble coat of arms.
