Where is Cinto Euganeo?
The municipality of Cinto Euganeo borders to the north with Vo’, to the south with Baone, to the east with Galzignano Terme, to the west with Lozzo Atestino.
Trail n° 11 of Monte Cinto
To embark on the pleasant nature trail, you can leave your car in the Cava Bomba museum parking lot at Via Bomba, 48. Alternatively, you can park on Via Bomba (45.27315677703795, 11.657786822797268), right in front of the trailhead.
Marked by an information panel, the start of the route heads north towards the Geopaleontological Park, a thriving natural area dotted with acacias, poplars, ailanthus, elms, and oaks, among whose branches you can see majestic reproductions of an Androsaurus, a dinosaur with a fearsome appearance despite being herbivorous, a terrifying Allosaurus with wide-open jaws, and a rampaging Apatosaurus whose long, powerful neck rivals the height of the surrounding tree trunks.
The white lane climbs up to a clearing offering a splendid view of the Euganean Hills.
Arranged on a small rail, some rust-covered carts bear witness to the process of extracting and transporting limestone, necessary for lime production. The carts are now part of the Cava Bomba museum itinerary, a fascinating example of 19th-century industrial archaeology.
After passing a few hairpin bends climbing the hillside, the stony path leads to some olive trees and a lush vineyard. The signage of trail n° 11 will guide you through the dense woodland vegetation covered in ivy and dotted with broom.
The fortress of Monte Cinto and the Rhyolite Quarry
The stony trail becomes slightly steeper and leads to a staircase of wood and packed earth, after which you arrive at the ‘pianoro delle masegne’, where you will find a table and wooden benches in the shade of a chestnut tree.
At the ‘pianoro delle masegne’ you will find directions to the mysterious remains of a thousand-year-old fortress, to a spectacular quarry covered in a layer of ivy, ferns, and moss that reveals suggestive columnar formations of rhyolite. Another deviation leads to the summit of Monte Cinto, at 282 meters above sea level.
Il buso dei Briganti
After visiting the quarry, the ancient ruins, and the summit of the volcanic mountain, return to the ‘pianoro delle masegne’ and take the path to the left to reach one of the most significant destinations of the itinerary: the buso dei Briganti.
Once you reach the rest area, you will find signs for the deviation to the Buso dei Briganti. According to legend, during the 19th century, the winding trachyte tunnel gave shelter to groups of bandits who, taking advantage of the isolated position of the cave, could hide and at the same time observe the surrounding valley from a privileged position.
Back at the rest area, follow the CAI 11 signpost to return to the starting point.
If you’re wondering what to do in Cinto Euganeo, trail n° 11 is a pleasant scenic itinerary from which you can admire the boundless panorama of the fertile volcanic slopes of the Euganean Hills, clad in woods and crossed by lush vineyards.
