Padova/Vicenza/Verona, 11 November 2024ย โ Theย Foliage Weeksย are kicking off in Veneto:ย from 17 November to 1 December, the Dimore Amiche of Venetoย โ an excellence network that brings together those Adsi Historic Houses (Italian Association of Historic Houses, Veneto section) that are still lived in today by the families who have inhabited them for centuries โ are organizing guided tours dedicated to the most romantic of autumn symbols: welcome Foliage โ Magical Autumn Atmospheres.ย
In Veneto, the next three weeks of foliage will be packed with events in seven residences between Padova, Vicenza and Verona:ย Parco Frassanelle, Villa Rosa,ย Villa Valmarana ai Nani,ย Castello di Thiene, Villa Sagramoso Sacchetti, Villa Angarano, Villa da Schio will offer visitors the thrill of historic gardens turning into fairytale landscapes.
Among the not-to-be-missed appointments are those with the landscape designers who have been taking care of the parks of the Dimore Amiche for years.ย Pamela Nicheleย is one of them, a landscape designer working in Italy and abroad: we asked her how to put together the perfect palette in a sort of treasure hunt through autumn colours. โGinko and Linden are the two kings of yellow โ explains Nichele โ and when their leaves turn from green, we know that autumn has truly arrived. Nature always finds a way to โtell its storyโ; all you have to do is know how to catch its signs.โ Speaking again about colours, Nichele continues: โMaple or Liquidambar give us red tones, while Nyssa turns its leaves orange; to tie everything together with the right shades, the yellow-orange typical of Beech is essential.โย
Theย foliage, in fact, is thatย autumnal change in the colour of tree leaves from green to yellow and to the various shades of red, caused by the decrease in chlorophyll: as sunlight decreases, the green colour becomes less visible and the other pigmentsย (no longer masked by chlorophyll)ย such as carotenoids, which give the typical yellow-brown colour, prevail.ย The red and purple shades of some plants, on the other hand, depend on a different group of pigments, anthocyanins, which, unlike carotenoids, are not always present in plants, but are produced in autumn.ย This natural event enchants thousands of people every year, fascinated by the countless shades that the woods offer visitors.
