The Regional Natural Park of the Sile River
The Sile River: from the springs to the Cervara Natural Oasis
Born from the icy springs in the area between Cavasagra and Casacorba di Vedelago, on the border between the provinces of Treviso and Padua, the Sile River initially flows with a sinuous course before emptying into the drainage canal. Coming from the west, this canal cuts through the countryside of the Joyous March and flows into the Cervara Mill Natural Oasis, the last large intact wetland along the resurgence belt of the upper Sile.
From Treviso to the Cimitero dei Burci
The riverbed becomes serpentine again and converges into the large artificial basins of the former quarries in Quinto di Treviso, then skirts the towns of Canizzano and Sant’Angelo until it reaches Treviso. Entering the city, the Sile mixes its waters with the largest branch of the Botteniga at the point where Ponte Dante stands, dedicated to the Supreme Poet for having immortalized the city in the verse of the Divine Comedy: «e dove Sile e Cagnan s’accompagna,» (Paradiso IX, 49).
The river continues its course toward the southwest, offering scenes of rare beauty visible from the Sile Towpath and from the footbridges crossing the evocative Cimitero dei Burci in Casier. Of particular interest along the way are the former Mandelli Mill and the former Chiari e Forti Oil Mill, precious testimonies of the thriving productive activities that once animated the banks of the Sile.
River panoramas in Casale sul Sile
The wide meanders of the river wind between the bright countryside scenery of the low Treviso plain and the historic center of Casale. Along the path that follows the serpentine course of the Sile, one is enchanted by the white mass of the Carrarese Tower, framed by towering Lombardy poplars, rivaling in height the bell tower of the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, built at the river port of Casale sul Sile.
The riparian vegetation of black alders, plane trees, poplars, dogwoods, viburnums, field elms, buckthorns, privets, hawthorns, field maples, black locusts, and white willows plays a fundamental role in maintaining the delicate natural balance of the area, helping to counteract water pollution and consolidate the banks.
The bird species associated with wetlands that find their habitat in this location include the Purple Heron, Kingfisher, Osprey, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Common Chiffchaff, Wood Warbler, Grey Heron, Little Egret, and Black-crowned Night Heron.
Park of the Old Poplars
Covering an area of thirty-five thousand square meters, the Park of the Old Poplars includes volleyball and basketball courts and a playground surrounded by tree-covered hills. Crossed by a pleasant cycle-pedestrian path, this lush green lung is an ideal destination for those who want to do physical activity outdoors in contact with nature.
