Crossed by the streams Brenton and Avenale, the territory of Altivole stands out for an exceptional artistic, architectural, and naturalistic panorama that in every season of the year arouses the admiration of thousands of visitors.
Il Barco della Regina Cornaro
Located at Via Cornaro, 47, the charming rural building is harmoniously set in a large tree-lined garden. Marked by a bright loggia rhythmically punctuated by Ionic columns, the barchessa is adorned with splendid 16th-century frescoes.
Il Memoriale Brion nel Comune di Altivole
The grandiose funerary complex, located at via Brioni, 31030 in San Vito di Altivole, was commissioned to architect and designer Carlo Scarpa to commemorate the passing of the great Venetian industrialist Giuseppe Brion (1909-1968).
The L-shaped plan of the funerary complex features two circular openings that intersect to create a continuity link between the massive architectural environment and the external natural element consisting of a radiant garden and a clear pond which, together with several water mirrors, symbolizes the flow of life.
The evocative monumental complex combines the heaviness and grayness of reinforced concrete with spacious and airy environments, whose complex geometric figures create exciting chiaroscuro contrasts.
The sanctuary has at its center the aedicule housing the tombs of the two spouses, while a slit on the top of the roof evokes the ancient belief that the souls of the deceased, once abandoned their mortal remains, could ascend to heaven.
Surrounded by water, a mighty concrete cube features on its top a colorful pyramidal covering with an opening at the summit.
In addition to being an avant-garde artistic and architectural landmark, the Brion memorial seems to communicate with its forms a sense of deep melancholy and at the same time to invite contemplation of the continuous and natural alternation of life, growth, and death.
If you are wondering what to see in Altivole, the Memoriale Brion is one of the most significant and evocative sites in the municipality, a synthesis of Carlo Scarpa’s genius where architecture and nature harmonize in a brilliant way.
Church of San Vito
The architectural style of the structure, sober and majestic, follows the lines of the neoclassical style, as can be seen from the solemn facade tripartite by elegant Corinthian columns surmounted by a dentiled pediment, decorated at the vertices with three acroteria.
Located at via Piazza S. Vito, 1, the white mass of the place of worship is flanked by a soaring square-based bell tower, made of massive stone blocks and crowned by a refined belfry of classical taste.
