Bicycle ride in San Michele al Tagliamento
Start of the route in Villanova
The recommended bicycle ride starts from the parking lot on Provincial Road 75 in the hamlet of Villanova (45.83705002783913, 12.957998427312305). Exit the parking lot, cross the pedestrian crossing and turn left leaving behind the Parish of San Tomaso Apostolo.
The paper mill of Villanova
Follow the cycle path along Provincial Road 75 for 650 meters, venturing into the fertile rural landscape under the shade of lush hedges of acacias, poplars and willows until you find, on your left, the paper mill of Villanova.
History and beauty of the paper mill
Harmoniously set in a patch of green land lapped by the cold course of the Tagliamento and framed by a vast floodplain forest formation, the structure that can be visited today was originally a factory converted in the 17th century into a plant for the production of paper, a very precious material whose manufacture required huge water consumption.
Later converted into a hydroelectric power plant and restored to its former glory after careful renovation work, the building represents one of the most significant examples of industrial archaeology in the municipality.
The route along the Tagliamento
After the visit, continue south for 60 meters along the provincial road and take the dirt path on your left at the sign of the Gira Tagliamento itinerary.
Follow for about 9 km the path that winds along the sinuous bends of the Tagliamento, along whose banks the dense forest formations grow lushly.
War memorial and Villa Mocenigo Biaggini Ivancich
Past the hamlet of San Giorgio al Tagliamento, descend from the embankment at the solemn monument dedicated to the fallen of World War I that stands near a dark cypress (45.773537567559856, 12.993714215861257).
Leave the monument on your left, turn right and travel along provincial road 73 for 140 meters, then turn left onto Via Carlo Ivancich until you reach the entrance of Villa Mocenigo Biaggini Ivancich.
Villa Mocenigo Biaggini Ivancich
Immersed in a lush garden dotted with majestic cedars, holm oaks and cypress poplars, the sumptuous stately residence is in all probability the most remarkable example of the architectural heritage of Latisana.
Wrapped in an irresistible atmosphere of mystery, the white ruins of the architectural complex are the magnificent remains of the Mocenigo estate that withstood the devastating bombings of World War I.
Near the noble residence, raised on three levels and distinguished by an elegant three-light window with parapet, the imposing barchesse of the late 16th century, marked by wide round arches, stand isolated in the centuries-old park, unlike traditional Venetian rural villas where the rural service buildings were connected to the main body.
The natural reserve of the Tagliamento mouth
After visiting the enchanting centuries-old property, one of the most fascinating and romantic places in the area, take the Tagliamento cycle path again and proceed south following the serpentine course of the clear river which, at times silent and placid, at times impetuous, traces its course eroding the primitive rocky bed and forming tortuous intertwining that delimits ever-changing river islands of white stones.
Bibione beach
Follow the indications of the cycle tour path at the border with Friuli-Venezia Giulia until you reach the stretch of river that separates Bibione from the Riviera di Lignano. To reach the last stage of the itinerary, continue along the pleasant gravel path in the shade of tall acacias that goes into the natural reserve of the Tagliamento mouth, a peaceful natural oasis buried by dense prickly foliage through whose sharp branches the sun’s rays filter pale in autumn, bright and scorching in August.
The dry, pointy leaves scattered on the path thin out, blending into the sandy ground that leads to the coast strewn with wild reeds and thorny bushes from which the lighthouse rises, announcing with its towering bulk the wonderful scenery of the golden beach of the Bibione sea, awarded in 2022 with the thirty-first consecutive Blue Flag for the healthiness of its environment and biodiversity.
The breathtaking view of Bibione
From here you can enjoy a wide-ranging view of the landscape made of steep and regular cliffs, of the horizon where sea and sky seem to merge on clear days, of scattered tufts of rugged maritime vegetation anchored to the dune cloaked with shrubs and maritime pines.
