The church of Sant’Antonio Abate
Nestled in the historic heart of the charming rural town in Piazza Caduti Per La Libertà, this medieval place of worship stands out for its simple gabled facade, horizontally marked by bands of exposed brick and white stone (or plastered surfaces).
The massive wooden door is topped by a white lunette decorated with a high-relief depiction of Sant’Antonio Abate, recognizable by his monastic robe and the “tau”-shaped staff to which two little bells are tied.
The entrance portal is set within a large round arch, slightly recessed into the front, which rises vertically at the center of the facade and is crowned by a rose window set in a moulded frame.
Crowning the structure is a plain triangular pediment in exposed brick, topped by a Latin cross.
To the side of the church rises the bell tower, also in exposed brick and ending in a metal octagonal spire. Along the side of the bell tower facing southeast, six round-arched single-light windows open up, interspersed with white bands. On the side facing southwest, a clock with Arabic numerals stands out, below the cornice of the bell chamber.
Inside, the place of worship is divided into three naves marked by cross vault arches and is enriched by refined altars in polychrome marble and valuable paintings.
If you are wondering what to do in Piacenza d’Adige, the church of Sant’Antonio Abate is a true gem of art and architecture waiting to be visited.
Carducci schools
Located in Via Galvan 227, the exposed-brick school building is one of the most fascinating and representative architectural works in the municipality of Piacenza d’Adige.
Dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, the school is harmoniously set in a lovely garden dotted with cedars, magnolias and ginkgo biloba. Above the large three-light opening that provides access to the building stands a four-light opening enhanced by an elegant balcony.
One of the structure’s most distinctive features is the imposing quadrangular tower rising at the center of the facade, in which there is an oculus flanked by two narrow slit-like openings.
Also noteworthy are the refined corbels that support the overhang of the roof and tower.
