Where is the municipality of Meolo?
The municipality of Meolo borders to the north with Monastier di Treviso, to the northeast with Fossalta di Piave, to the south with Quarto d’Altino and Roncade, to the east with Musile di Piave, to the west with Roncade.
Bike ride in Meolo
The recommended bike ride starts from the parking lot at the personnel service office in Piazza Donatori del Sangue 1, Meolo (VE), at the municipal urban park equipped with a children’s play area, benches and wooden tables to rest in the shade of the foliage of birches, elms, pines, cedars and acacias, just to name a few of the lush tree species that dot the green area.
Itinerary in the historic center of Meolo
The entrance of the personnel service office is behind you. Proceed towards Via Giacomo Buranello on your left. Once you reach Via Giacomo Buranello, cross the street and turn right, then keep left and continue along Via Diaz for 250 meters. Turn right onto Via Papa Pio X and continue for 170 meters along the road flanked by flourishing linden trees, then turn left into Piazza Pio X, a splendid area paved with cobblestones from which rises the majestic bulk of the church of San Giovanni Battista, built in front of the placid river from which the town takes its name, anticipated by the view of the white square-based bell tower.
The Church of San Giovanni Battist
The stone façade with its projections, unadorned and austere, features two graceful blind mullioned windows on the sides, one of which is partially hidden by the massive bell tower leaning against the wall, and a large rose window, also blind, which stands out in the central position.
Accessible via the wooden door marked by square panels and surmounted by a lunette, the interior of the church is divided into three naves. A further element of architectural value is the octagonal drum of the bell tower bearing a single lancet window on each side, upon which the soaring spire is inserted.
Visit to Ca’ Cappello
Leave the church façade on your left and walk around the perimeter of the parish, passing by the oratory until you reach Via Papa Pio X.
At this point turn right and continue along Via Papa Pio X for 150 meters until you reach on your left Ca’ Cappello, a splendid medieval palace with an elegant three-light window on the façade, divided by Ionic columns and with a white parapet in the center, below which stands the municipal coat of arms. In correspondence with the mezzanine floor, pale fragments of ancient frescoes stand out against the dark pink walls.
The Town Hall of Meolo
Accessible via a wooden door flanked by two lion sculptures, the town hall building overlooks a small square bordered by well-tended holm oaks, in which stands the solemn monument bearing the names of the fallen from Meolo in the Second World War. Resting on a white stone base adorned with a capital with large volutes, the commemorative pole rises several meters and culminates with the figure of the Lion of Saint Mark.
Excursion in Bosco Belvedere
The last stop of the route is the lush oasis of Bosco Belvedere, a serene green lung and an ideal destination for those looking for a relaxing place away from traffic noise.
Leave the entrance of Ca’ Cappello behind you and head southeast along Piazza Martiri per la Libertà for 180 meters. At the roundabout take the second exit and continue along Via Roma for 550 meters, then take the cycle-pedestrian underpass, after crossing which keep left on Via Roma and continue for 280 meters.
At the intersection turn right, cross the bridge and turn left onto Via S. Filippo, then continue along Via S. Filippo for about 300 meters until you find on your right the dirt road that crosses the precious plant microcosm of Bosco Belvedere, a vast naturalistic area that includes prosperous specimens of white poplar, elm, field maple and even bamboo, not to mention the notable complex of amphibian and bird species whose presence attests to the healthiness of the delicate ecosystem in which they live.
