Discover what to do in Zermeghedo: the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the Gobeto festival, the March of the 5 Bell Towers: Would you like to know more? First of all…
Where is Zermeghedo?
The municipality of Zermeghedo borders to the north with Montorso Vicentino, to the south and west with Montebello Vicentino, to the east with Montecchio Maggiore.
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo
Located at Via Chiesa, 1, the spectacular Romanesque-Byzantine bulk of the parish church rises atop a hill overlooking the urban heart of the village.
The 20th-century facade of the place of worship, behind which the sinuous profile of majestic wooded hills is outlined, is divided horizontally into three registers separated by string courses.
The lower section is articulated by four Corinthian pilasters supporting the dentilled string course bearing the year of construction of the church, 1912 (A.D. MCMXII).
The arched wooden portal is adorned with quadrangular panels and topped by a curved pediment surmounted by the statue of the patron saint with outstretched wings. On either side of the door are two splayed round-arched mullioned windows, above which opens a small oculus.
The upper register, also tripartite, features a rose window decorated with tracery formed by eight columns connected by small arches reminiscent of a flower.
The top part of the facade is rhythmically punctuated by elegant small arches supported by slender columns whose whiteness stands out against the red brick wall. This ornamental motif follows the slopes of the roof crowned by a stone cross.
Alongside the church rises the ancient stone bell tower culminating in a spire resting on an octagonal drum.
If you are wondering what to do in Zermeghedo, from the privileged position where the church stands, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Chiampo valley and the fabulous scenery of the Berici hills that stand out on the horizon.
The Gobeto festival
A recommended appointment for foodies, especially those with a sweet tooth, the Gobeto festival celebrates the delicious recipe that originated in this charming municipality located at the foot of the Lessini mountains in southwestern Vicenza area.
The last edition, the sixth, was held in Piazza Regaù from Friday 31 to Sunday 2 June 2019.
For the event, large and comfortable tent structures are set up where you can savor platters of mixed cold cuts and local cheeses, tasty sandwiches, pasta with tomato sauce and bacon, as well as overseas dishes such as classic hot dogs with french fries and succulent chicken tacos.
The undisputed protagonist of the event, the gobeto is a fragrant biscuit whose shape resembles a stylized smile. Distinguished by ochre and golden hues, the tasty DE.CO (municipal designation) specialty is prepared with flour, brown sugar, olive oil, yeast, and Recioto, an indigenous wine specialty that gives the dessert its unmistakable delicate aroma.
The rich program also includes dance evenings with ballroom orchestras, country and Latin American music shows, colorful rides for children, and markets with local products.
If you are wondering what to do in Zermeghedo and want to spend the spring season in a picturesque rural village nestled among green slopes furrowed by vineyards and dotted with silver olive trees, attending the Gobeto festival might be just the thing for you!
