Santa Margherita
Living in the 3rd century, Margherita of Antioch of Pisidia was born in the eponymous city located in present-day Turkey. Daughter of a pagan priest and orphaned of her mother, Margherita was educated in the teachings of Christ by the nursemaid who took care of her, at a time when Christians were oppressed and tormented by the edicts of Diocleziano.
Repudiated by her father because of her faith, Santa Margherita left her home forever and was welcomed by her nurse. Having rejected the attempts to seduce the young girl, prefect Ollario took revenge by arresting Margherita for her religious beliefs.
According to legend, the devil, taking the form of a dragon, swallowed the girl who, wielding a cross, tore the beast’s belly and saved herself. Determined not to renounce her faith, a sudden seismic event announced the descent of a dove from heaven and placed a crown on her head.
Despite having shown courage and self-denial, the young girl was beheaded on July 20, 290. At the age of fifteen.
Visit the Church of San Bartolomeo
Unlike the parish church described above, the church of San Bartolomeo, located at Via Molino, 12, 31010 Bibano di Godega di Sant’Urbano TV, fortunately survived the bombings of the two world wars and constitutes the oldest example of ecclesiastical architecture in the municipality.
Located in the heart of the natural oasis of San Bartolomeo, the medieval place of worship underwent several expansion and renovation works over the centuries.
Distinguished by a bare gable facade, the church has an austere and essential line and houses inside a veritable treasure chest of sculptural and pictorial works that meticulous restoration interventions have brought to light, as in the case of a valuable wall painting dating back to the 15th century, depicting the Madonna and Child and Saints Bartolomeo, Rocco, Pietro, and Sebastiano.
Another prominent element is the refined wooden altarpiece depicting San Bartolomeo.
San Bartolomeo
Living in the 1st century AD, San Bartolomeo was born in ancient Galilee, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea, and died in the area between Georgia and Syria.
The holy apostle Natatele would have carried out the mission of spreading the word of Christ in the territories of the southern Arabian peninsula, Mesopotamia, Armenia, and would have been martyred, according to some hypotheses by decapitation, by crucifixion, or, according to the most accredited version, would have been flayed.
