Looking for what to do in Fontanelle? Situated on the strip of springs once distinguished by crystalline fountains, the territory of Fontanelle is crossed by a rich river system of which the Monticano, followed by the canals Lia, Rasego, Resteggia and Vallontello, represents the main watercourse.
If the abundance of water resources and the fertility of the soil, originally cloaked in vast and flourishing woodland extensions, favored the birth of the first Paleovenetian settlements, the construction of the Roman communication road that united Opitergium to Serravalle contributed to the development of a prosperous and lively town.

What to Do in Fontanelle? Villa Galvagna Giol and the centuries-old English park

An expression of Bagnara’s scenographic genius and taste for theatricality (whose talent had brought him to decorate the interiors of the Teatro La Fenice), the spectacular park extends over ten hectares and, centuries after its design, amazes and delights anyone who ventures into it to discover its wonders:
Enveloped by the soft grassy carpet of the English lawn, three splendid lakes with lively islands of swans alternate with sinuous watercourses crossed by small bridges.
Like a romantic natural curtain observable from white paths, imposing and proud trees gently touch the water mirrors with their verdant branches.
Giramonticano: bike ride from Fontanelle to Motta di Livenza
Starting from the Parish of the Nativity of Mary in Fontanellette, you take Via Ongaresca and cross a bridge that offers suggestive landscape views of the Monticano river and the surrounding plain. After passing a large poplar visible on the left, you reach a second bridge, after crossing which, on the right, you embark on the 25-km cycle-pedestrian path that connects Fontanelle, Oderzo, Gorgo al Monticano and Motta di Livenza.
Marked by a large sign illustrating the cycling route, the serene itinerary that runs along the banks of the Monticano offers a wide and privileged view of the historical and naturalistic panorama of the territory.
A few hundred meters from the start of the Giramonticano, framed by hedges bordering a clear canal and the green rows of a vineyard, stand out the white saliente facade of the Church of San Pietro and the bell tower culminating in an octagonal spire.
The itinerary follows the sinuous course of the river through the lush and vibrant rural vegetation of Fontanelle until reaching the parish church of Lutrano. After about five kilometers, the Torresin and the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista announce with their towering mass the nearby historic center of Oderzo.
The next stop is the old Parish Church of Saints Philip and James in Fratta di Oderzo, recognizable by its exposed brick structure and austere facade adorned with pilasters joined by hanging arches.
The route continues accompanying the visitor to Gorgo al Monticano, an ideal destination for cycling enthusiasts and peaceful walks to discover suggestive natural sites such as the Cavalier forest, a treasure chest of tree, floral and faunal biodiversity, as well as charming stately homes like Villa Foscarini Cornaro and Villa Revedin, symbols of the glory and splendor of our past and invaluable testimony to the cultural heritage of the Veneto region.
Arriving at the point where the placid and serpentine course of the Monticano flows into the waters of the Livenza, the adventure continues towards the ancient city founded at the confluence of the two rivers, the first born from the slopes of Monte Prai in Vittorio Veneto, the second from the icy karst springs of the Santissima and Gorgazzo in the Friulian municipality of Polcenigo.
Deeply linked, besides the course of the two rivers, to the presence of an ancient earthen mound on which a legendary castle once stood, Motta di Livenza reconciles the fairy-tale atmosphere of river landscapes visible from restful tree-lined avenues, with the impressive diversity of the city’s artistic and architectural heritage, from the 16th-century cathedral of San Nicolò Vescovo to the vivid frescoes decorating the facade of Palazzo Dugo, to the vast and airy porticoes of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, containing inside valuable paintings, one of which, depicting the Annunciation, is attributed to Pomponio Amalteo, (1505; 1588) a great painter to whom Motta di Livenza gave birth.
For cycling lovers looking for what to do in Fontanelle, riding the Giramonticano will be a memorable and exciting experience!
