Discover what to do in Campagna Lupia in the province of Venezia: WWF Oasis Valle Averto, Casone Zappa, the festival of Santa Giustina, but first…
Where is Campagna Lupia?
The municipality of Campagna Lupia borders to the north with Mira, to the northwest with Dolo and Camponogara, to the south with Codevigo, to the southeast with Chioggia, to the southwest with Piove di Sacco, to the east with Venezia and Chioggia, to the west with Dolo, Camponogara, Campolongo Maggiore and Piove di Sacco.
WWF Oasis of Valle Averto
The splendid and vast natural oasis extends for about five hundred hectares in the uncontaminated scenery of the Venetian lagoon.
The spectacular protected area rises in a wetland born from the creation of artificial canals during the 1600s, among which we must mention the Taglio Navissimo, a grand hydraulic work that channels the waters of the Brenta to the Venice lagoon.
The wide valley includes a lush wooded area rich in biodiversity with over two hundred bird species, many passerines such as the goldcrest, chaffinch, firecrest, great tit, and long-tailed tit, as well as predatory passerines like the majestic sparrowhawk. Among mammals, you can see foxes, badgers, stone martens, weasels, and dormice, not to mention the various and colorful species of fish, amphibians, and reptiles, whose presence testifies to the healthiness of the waters of this vast yet fragile oasis.
The delicate ecosystem of the reserve, fed by both fresh and brackish waters, is reflected in the flourishing diversity of vegetation and the coexistence of lush wooded areas and marshy zones rich in reeds, rushes, and sedges, typical of wetlands.
Among the numerous species living in the hygrophilous habitat, the European tree frog stands out.
The educational oasis features several explanatory panels that illustrate the complexity of the impressive landscape variety of the reserve, explorable through self-guided tours or with professional guides along suggestive itineraries immersed in greenery and away from traffic.
Casone Zappa
Immersed in the enchanting lagoon scenery of the municipality of Campagna Lupia, Casone Zappa is one of the most picturesque buildings in the Veneto region.
The elegant and curvilinear forms of the 20th-century structure, (immediately recognizable in the sinuous profile of the facade and the spiral staircase that runs externally around the tower) combined with the striking chromatic contrasts in white, red, and green, recall the features of art nouveau.
The refined building seems suspended in a fantastic setting where the evocative expanse of fields and salt marshes, observed from above, appears to form a winding green labyrinth whose lush vegetation stands out against the cold waters of the lagoon populated by eels, sea bream, and sea bass.
The delicate lagoon ecosystem also constitutes the ideal habitat for various bird species such as blackcaps, whose enchanting song emerges from the deep silence of the almost completely uninhabited valley.
The starting point to reach the destination is on a side road near Atn Laguna Sud (45.34043377941742, 12.13530651559028). The route winds for 8.2 km through the evocative lagoon environment until reaching the destination.
Festival of Santa Giustina
