Bike ride in Cavallino Treporti
The recommended bike ride starts from the parking lot of the parish of Santa Maria Elisabetta at Via Ca’ Martin, 1. Via Ca’ Martin, head to the roundabout on provincial road 42, take the first exit and travel along provincial road Jesolana for 2.5 km keeping left. Leave the bridge over the Sile on your right, continue along provincial road Jesolana for 250 meters and turn left into Via del Casson.
Follow the pleasant asphalted route flanked by a fence and continue along the road paved with red tiles that runs along the grassy embankment from which you can see the landing stage and the wooden poles that follow the sinuous course of Canale Casson.
Proceed along Via del Casson to Piazza S. Maria Elisabetta, keep right and follow the bike path in Via Pordelio for 400 meters, then turn right and follow Via della Marinona from which you will enjoy a wide-ranging view of the boundless panorama of the salt marshes, characterized by long tongues of land covered with rough salty vegetation lapped by the sinuous lagoon currents.
From this dreamlike landscape, in which tamarisks and reeds seem suspended on the blanket of fog that in the morning envelops changing islets scattered on the water’s surface, rises a fascinating and significant legacy of the glorious Serenissima Republic: a white boundary marker dating back to 1791 that marked the boundaries of the lagoon. (45.48452757806055, 12.534950968793115).
Continue along Via della Marinona from which you can admire the suggestive natural landscape dotted with oak bricole that on clear days reflect in the bright mirror of water that disappears into the horizon.
At the end of Via della Marinona keep right and continue for 6.1 km along the modern bike path in Via Pordelio. From the comfortable path in wood, steel and concrete you can see nimble boats winding along the tortuous labyrinth from which large patches of land, leopard-like, emerge wrapped in a mantle of maritime vegetation capable of withstanding the high salt density of this environment.
At the roundabout at the bridge in Via Treportina (45.457064225537366, 12.455978230251008), take the second exit and continue on Via degli Armeni for 1.2 km along Canale Saccagnana, then keep left on Via Lungomare San Felice and proceed for 2 km until you reach the ferry stop of Punta Sabbioni where you will find bars, restaurants and tobacco shops.
Proceed south for about 3 km via the bike path of Lungomare Dante Alighieri that flanks the pier until you reach the lighthouse that rises at the end of the coastline.
After admiring the clear sea and exploring the deep dunes from which golden tufts of rush and pungent esparto grass wave in the wind, return to the entrance of the beach (45.4261471086187, 12.431874781992756) and take the dirt path that goes into the uncontaminated landscape of the forest of Punta Sabbioni from which thrive lush maritime pines, stone pines and Aleppo pines.
After visiting the nature reserve, head north until you exit onto Via Montello.
To reach the last stages of the bike route, the church of Santa Maria della Neve and Palazzo Boldù, follow Via Montello eastward passing by the forest of Ca’ Savio, a serene wooded area crossed by pleasant paths in the shade of wide evergreen canopies.
At the intersection with Via Retrone (45.44359720109913, 12.449291876464663) turn left and proceed for 650 meters. At the intersection with Via Brenta, turn right, then immediately left and follow Via Isonzo for 500 meters to the intersection. Turn right and follow the bike path along the provincial road Jesolana to the roundabout.
Take the third exit onto Via Treportina, cross the bridge over Canale Saccagnana, the bridge over Canale Portosecco, then continue on Via Porfirogenito and pass through Piazza Santissima Trinità from which rises the parish church, a splendid sixteenth-century place of worship distinguished by a salient facade adorned with a motif of hanging arches. Vertically tripartite by sturdy pilasters, the church is accessible via a wooden door surmounted by a lunette above which stands the large stained glass rose window framed by a large round arch.
Crowning the vertical development of the structure are two white spires flanking a stone cross placed on top of the structure.
Another element of architectural value is the soaring bell tower, rhythmically marked at the belfry by elegant mullioned windows.
Proceed north, cross Canale Saccagnana and turn right. Continue on Via Saccagnana for 1.2 km and turn right onto Via del Prà.
Follow Via del Prà for 300 meters, then keep right on Via di Lio Piccolo for 3 km plunging into the magical and primordial scenery made of thin canals that with their irregular and unpredictable course delimit countless patches of uncultivated land from which emerge tamarisks, maritime and marsh plants such as salt marsh esparto, salicornia and Puccinellia.
The road will lead you to a large square overlooking the sumptuous mass of Palazzo Baldù, a majestic three-story manor house built about four hundred years ago. Next to the sumptuous building is the church of Santa Maria della Neve and the Gothic-style bell tower with pointed mullioned windows in which, at the center of the tracery, small circular openings open. Built at the end of the 19th century, the charming place of worship and the fairy-tale environment in which it is set constitute one of the most enchanting locations in the municipality.
Go back along the road until you return to the church of the Santissima Trinità, continue south crossing again the bridges over Canale Portosecco, Saccagnana and proceed along Via Treportina to the roundabout in the locality of Ca’ Savio (45.45365265731794, 12.45784354204805).
Take the third exit and proceed east for 7.6 km in the shade of the prickly fronds of maritime pines along the bike path of the provincial road Jesolana. At the roundabout at the Europa water park take the third exit and continue for 700 meters to the next roundabout. Take the first exit and continue for 220 meters, then take the paved road to your right that gives access to the square in front of the church of Santa Maria Elisabetta.
