Bike ride in Teglio Veneto and Cordovado
Start of the itinerary
The recommended bike ride starts from the parking lot in Via Cintello 1 (If the parking is occupied, you can park at the post office in Via Chiesa, 19) where the Glesia di Tei stands, an austere neoclassical place of worship rising from a white paved square surrounded by a bright lawn dotted with willows.
The church of Tei
The classical references are found in the four Ionic pilasters supporting the architrave, the frieze and the dentilled pediment that concludes the vertical development of the double-pitched facade.
Accessible through a dark metal door bearing an embossed ornament depicting the crucifixion, the church is flanked by the towering mass of the brick campanile, in which open, at the belfry, four mullioned windows set with white stone columns above the large Roman numeral clock.
The Palio Tegliese
And it is precisely in the historic center of this charming stone town that every year on the second Sunday of September the Palio Tegliese takes place, an event that celebrates the primordial bond between man, the rhythms of nature and the animals that facilitate hard work in the fields. During the folkloric recurrence, the inhabitants show off traditional costumes as they accompany their faithful donkeys, pack animals with a generally docile character and remarkable physical endurance that for centuries have supported the heavy tasks of transport and plowing.
Church of Sant’Antonio
Leave the church to your left and walk along the sidewalk northeast until you reach the church of Sant’Antonio, a place of worship originally from the 15th century whose entrance is preceded by a suggestive porticoed area supported by six pillars and two columns. Inside, the place of worship has a black and white checkerboard floor leading to the raised presbytery area where three altars are placed. Further valuable elements are the refined wooden truss roof and the bell gable that rises at the apex of the roof.
Externally, the side walls of the building are adorned with a pattern of intersecting blind arches that follow the profile of the eaves cornice.
Exploring the Venetian hinterland
After visiting the place of worship, probably the most representative building of the town, proceed south along Via Ippolito Nievo for 190 meters, then turn left and go along Via Perarutto for 1.8 km, entering the quiet agricultural landscape of the small town in the Venetian hinterland.
Immersed among willows and cherry trees
Proceed along the winding road flanked by grassy banks scattered with willows and cherry trees until you reach an elegant manor house wrapped in a radiant park accessible through a fine iron gate partly hidden by the thick foliage of majestic ash trees.
Keep left and go from the asphalt road to the winding path that enters the vast and silent agricultural landscape bordered by tall and lush hedges.
Through Via Parz
At the intersection, turn right and follow Via Parz in the shade of black poplars, Salix viminalis, white willows and a dense bamboo hedge for 1.3 km until you reach a tall acacia tree that stands near the B&B Ca’ del Tajo, a splendid three-story red brick country house harmoniously set in a serene tree-lined garden.
Following the Teglio river
Cross the bridge and, unless there are prohibition signs, turn left and follow the pleasant path that follows the clear and cold course of the Teglio river for 1.2 km, passing in front of the former NIKE Cordovado missile base. At the end of the dirt road, keep left along the asphalt road surrounded by cornfields.
The return
After 1.2 km, turn left at the American military base and proceed into the rural heart of Cordovado among acacias, willows and cornfields. At the intersection (45.823732452563654, 12.891450463835573) turn slightly left, then right and continue south for 650 meters, then turn right into Via Miris.
Travel along Via Miris to the intersection, then turn right and continue on Via Parz for about 500 meters until you return to the church of Teglio.
