Casa Castelir
Where is Casa Castellir?
Located at Borgo Rugolet, 17, 31026 Sarmede TV, Casa Castellir is one of the most colorful and fascinating buildings in the municipality of Sarmede, thanks to the spectacular paintings that decorate its interior and exterior walls, the result of the creativity and talent of Gabriele Cattarin, a prolific artist from Treviso whose style is distinguished by the immediacy and communicative effectiveness of his compositions, in which the vibrant dynamism of the subjects is combined with bright and brilliant chromatism that astonishes and attracts the viewer with its vitality and expressiveness.
According to the version reported on the Casa Castelir website, the depiction that animates the west wall of the rural dwelling portrays a horseback duel between Rizzardo VI da Camino and the champion in the service of Bertrando di San Genesio, patriarch of Aquileia.
Who was Rizzardo VI?
Born at the end of the 13th century, Rizzardo VI was the son of Guecellone VII, captain of the city of Treviso, who, after opposing the expansionist aims of Cangrande della Scala in defense of Padua, allied himself with the Scaligeri against whom he had just fought since, despite his contribution to the victory against the Veronese house, Guecellone VII was denied the title of war captain of Treviso that he aspired to.
The alliance between the two families would have been sealed by the arranged marriage between Verde della Scala and Rizzardo VI in 1316.
Rizzardo, however, disregarded the alliance with the Scaligeri, who, having taken Belluno and Feltre in 1321, conquered the city of Serravalle after Guecellone’s death in 1324.
Having regained possession of the city after Cangrande’s death, Rizzardo VI renewed ties with the Veronese lordship, supporting its plan to take over Treviso.
Following the death of Pagano della Torre, patriarch of Aquileia, Rizzardo VI took advantage of the power vacuum to occupy Sacile, after which he asked Bertrand de Saint Geniès, the new patriarch, for official recognition of the fiefs in the territories of Cadore, Cordignano, Roganzuolo, and Cavolano.
After a stalemate, the armed conflict flared up again, this time leading to an unfavorable outcome for Rizzardo, who, already in difficulty and unable to count on Scaliger support, was expelled from Aquileia and subsequently definitively stripped of the fiefs he had claimed.
Rizzardo VI died in 1335 from wounds sustained in battle.
