Where is San Bonifacio located?
The municipality of San Bonifacio borders to the north with Monteforte d’Alpone, to the northeast with Gambellara, to the northwest with Soave, to the south with Arcole, to the east with Gambellara and Lonigo, to the west with Belfiore.
Bike ride in San Bonifacio
The starting point of the itinerary is the cemetery of San Bonifacio on Via Cimitero. Leave the cemetery entrance behind you and proceed left. At the intersection, cross the road and follow Via Ungaretti southwest. At the next intersection, keep right and follow Via Camporosolo for 650 meters to the roundabout. Take the second exit and continue for about 160 meters, then turn right to reach Piazza Costituzione, the historic center and beating heart of San Bonifacio’s social life.
In Piazza Costituzione you will find the town hall, an imposing 19th-century porticoed building, and the Duomo of Santa Maria Maggiore. After the visit, proceed southwest along Via Guglielmo Marconi towards the Alpone stream. Just before the bridge, take the cycle-pedestrian path on your right that winds along the stream’s embankment.
After 1.5 km, at the end of the cycle path, turn left, then at the intersection with Via Don Giuseppe Ambrosini, turn right. After 220 meters, keep right on Via Chiavichetta, then continue east on Vicolo Lago di Levico. At the intersection, turn left onto Via Marco Minghetti. At the roundabout, take the first exit and follow Via Trento to the intersection with Corso Venezia, then turn left. From Piazza della Stazione, keep right on Viale dei Tigli to the roundabout. Take the second exit and follow Via San Marco and Via Alcide de Gasperi for 800 meters.
At the intersection, turn left. Follow Via Praissola and Via A. Aleardi for 1.4 km, then turn right onto Via Andrea Palladio. After 350 meters, turn right and follow Via Prova and Via Cimitero for 1.6 km until you return to the starting point.
The church of Santa Maria Maggiore
Located at Piazza Costituzione, 8, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands out for its majestic neoclassical double-pitched façade, horizontally divided into two sections. The lower section is marked by six Ionic pilasters resting on high bases. Surmounted by a tympanum supported by two sinuous corbels, the wooden portal is flanked by two niches containing statues of San Bonifacio and Sant’Abbondio, the former depicted with helmet, armor, and cloak, the latter with bishop’s robes and pastoral staff. In the upper register, two pairs of Corinthian pilasters flank an architraved window surmounted by a denticulated triangular tympanum.
Completing the vertical development of the structure are the architrave, frieze, and triangular pediment crowned by three statues.
Characterized by a Latin cross plan, the church features a vast and bright single nave flanked by six side chapels, framed by Corinthian pilasters and half-columns.
