Bike Ride in Crespino
The starting point of the itinerary is Piazza Fetonte, overlooking the spectacular Baroque facade of the Church of Saints Martin and Severus. Leave the front of the place of worship behind you, cross the square, and proceed south on Via Trento. Once you reach the top of the embankment, proceed east for just over 6.5 km on Via Argine Po Fornace.
The first part of the route offers wide views of the Po River and the lush vegetation of cypress poplars, white willows, hornbeams, elms, alders, and dense thickets of common reeds that cover its banks.
After passing the side road to your right that leads to the Piarda “Amici del Po” landing (44.989781074576634, 11.962977487180055), proceed for another 170 meters, then descend the embankment towards the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the soaring bell tower that rises beside it.
Leave the church facade to your right and continue north on Via Roma to the intersection with provincial road 33, then turn left and continue along the bike path for 180 meters. At this point, cross the pedestrian crossing and take Via Ponte to your right. After about 500 meters, keep right and cross the bridge over the canal, then turn left onto Via Canalazzo and follow the watercourse for just over 1 km, which borders a lush poplar grove.
At the intersection, turn left onto Via Trombini, then turn right onto provincial road 33, entering the boundless countryside of Polesine dotted with rustic farmhouses surrounded by cornfields and thick hedges of acacias. After 350 meters, take SP 31 to your right.
After 1.2 km, keep left on Via Aguiaro and proceed for about 4 km in the silent rural landscape of Crespino. Cross provincial road 33 and follow Via Giuseppe Verdi for 750 meters, then keep right on Via Trieste until you return to Piazza Fetonte.
Villa Marzolla
Located at Via Trieste, 44, the architectural complex consists of a majestic three-story manor house with three portals, the central one arched. The three entrances are surmounted by a circular window, above which stands a triangular pediment.
Harmoniously set in a large garden dotted with centuries-old plants, the imposing structure balances the elegance of an 18th-century stately home with the functionality of an impressive rural farmhouse. The ground floor of the complex houses the stables, while the upper floors served as granaries.
The vast and bright rooms of Villa Marzolla today host an interesting ethnographic exhibition and a collection of vintage cars.
If you are wondering what to do in Crespino, Villa Marzolla is one of the most fascinating cultural and historical landmarks of Polesine.
