Ferragosto in Veneto: 3 unmissable locations to spend Ferragosto in Veneto
If you want to spend the sunny Ferragosto day immersed in the spectacular beauty of majestic forest sites, clear and crystalline water mirrors, and unspoiled natural oases, this article is for you! Below you will find 3 unmissable locations for anyone who wants to mitigate the Ferragosto heat by diving into the clear and fresh waters of Lake Santa Croce, taking peaceful walks that will lead you through the charming and shady meanders of the Cansiglio forest, or exploring the mysterious and thrilling scenery offered by the karst cavities of Oliero.
Ferragosto in Veneto: Cansiglio
The vast expanse of the Cansiglio plateau is the ideal natural setting to spend Ferragosto in a memorable way. The vast, evocative, and silent wooded area that crowns the green plain of Cansiglio welcomes hikers and travelers who love the serenity and quiet offered by nature.
Among the various itineraries that enter the fabulous tree vegetation, mainly consisting of spectacular beech forests, we recommend taking the pleasant route that starts from the Casa Vallorch Refuge (Center for naturalistic education in Farra d’Alpago) and takes the visitor along the Via dei Cimbri, leading to the ancient village of Vallorch, whose origins date back to settlements of colonists from the 12th and 14th centuries. The Cimbrian term, of uncertain etymology, seems akin to the Germanic word ‘zimbar’ (construction wood), related to the lumberjack work that this ancient population dedicated themselves to.
Once you reach the charming settlement, built during the 19th century, continue by taking the F1 trail on the left, which crosses the meanders of the radiant beech forest and leads to a gentle slope. Upon reaching the Taffarel road, turn right and continue until the S trail, which returns to the starting point. The hike will allow you to immerse yourself in a spectacular atmosphere whose ancient and delicate beauty seems immune to the passage of time.
Lake Santa Croce
Located in the municipality of Alpago in the province of Belluno, Lake Santa Croce is a spectacular and uncontaminated natural basin extending into the breathtaking natural environment of the Alpagota basin, surrounded by evocative mountain ridges wrapped in majestic and ancient forest sites, an ideal location to celebrate Ferragosto in Veneto.
The green setting where the cold and clear waters of the splendid lake extend is an unmissable destination both for lovers of serenity and rest who can’t wait to relax and sunbathe in peace, enjoying the pleasant summer breeze or diving into the crystal-clear waters of the lake, and for enthusiasts of excursions, on foot or by bicycle, and for adrenaline-seeking sportspeople who only windsurf, kitesurf, and sailing can offer.
An ideal location for birdwatching enthusiasts is the vast and evocative natural oasis of 30 hectares that hosts various natural habitats where an incredible mosaic of floral and faunal biodiversity proliferates, whose complexity adapts to and reflects variations in the lake’s water level.
The Labbo Codalunga, with its slender shape, black beak, and elegant bearing; the Cannaiola, with its small stature and plumage contrasting dark and brownish shades with white and tawny colors; the White Stork, with proud and regal movements; and the Little Grebe, a protected species with a short beak and beautiful red-chestnut plumage, are just a few examples of the numerous bird species you can admire in this enchanted setting.

Oliero Caves: a charming place to spend Ferragosto in Veneto
Located in the splendid natural scenery of the Brenta Valley in the Vicenza municipality of Valbrenta, the Oliero Caves form a fascinating complex of natural cavities formed over a slow and relentless erosion process of thousands of years, which began at the end of the last Ice Age, the result of which we can admire today.
The four karst caves open to the public are:
The Parolini Cave, also called Covol dei Siori, a spectacular natural cavity that houses one of the sources of the Oliero River. The cave takes its name from the man who discovered it and first entered it in 1822, later making it accessible to the public 10 years later.
The Covol dee Soree, whose name originates from the daughters of the owner and manager of the complex, Alberto Parolini, the first explorer of the cave.
The Covol dei Assassini, or Ezzelini Cave, has housed a series of tools whose discovery testifies to the presence of ancient settlements in these seemingly rugged places. The panorama offers breathtaking natural views that allow you to admire evocative examples of rupestrian vegetation such as the rock rampion. According to legend, the cave provided shelter to a group of bandits in the pay of Ezzelino da Romano.
The Covol dei Veci, from which the Oliero River springs, has inspired, thanks to its evocative beauty, the setting of the novel Cecilia di Baone by author Alvise Zorzi.
