The imposing military tomb stands where originally stood the monument dedicated to the heroes of the Piave designed by Alterige Giorgi di Carrara, a Tuscan sculptor born in Codena in 1885 and died in Carrara in 1970.

After graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara in 1908, the young artist participated in the competition for the National Artistic Pension and received praise from the jury for his bas-relief “Vita Campestre”. The talented artist was also awarded in 1911 for his plaster sculpture I gladiatori alla Meta Sudante.
Architecture of the Military Shrine in San Biagio di Callalta
Designed by the architect Pietro del Fabro from Udine, the exedra-shaped monument bears the inscription on the facade “The Piave murmured: the foreigner shall not pass.” The white neoclassical tomb was made of light marble and features a monumental portico with nine high round arches accessible via a staircase.
The structure houses the remains of 10,541 fallen soldiers, 5,350 of which are unidentified. Part of the shrine, used as a museum, displays uniforms, ammunition, weapons, and written testimonies documenting the events of the Great War, keeping its memory alive.
Tutti eroi! o il Piave o tutti accoppati!
In the large, well-kept garden separating the shrine from the road, a massive metal barge used during World War I for building pontoon bridges and two 105 mm cannons are visible.
In the eastern section of the garden, the remains of a ruined house wall that stood in San Biagio di Callalta not far from the river sacred to the Fatherland are preserved, on which was written “All heroes! Either the Piave or all dead!”
