Garda by Bike: what is it?
In recent months you have surely heard of Garda by Bike, a truly ambitious project that recently took its first steps; on July 14, 2018, the second section of the cycle path winding around Lake Garda, was inaugurated. The inaugurated section is only 2 kilometres, which will become 140 by 2021. This is the ambitious project that so far required an investment of 7 million euros for the first and second sections.
The longest cycle path in Europe
When completed, Garda by Bike will be the most beautiful cycle path in Europe, one that can also be tackled by non-cyclists, a true nature trail winding around Lake Garda, suspended about 50 metres above the water, allowing you to admire all the beauty of the nature surrounding Lake Garda.
Garda by Bike: the route
The cycle path winds along the west bank of the spectacular lake basin and crosses the provinces of: Brescia, Verona, Trento and Mantova. The complete route in 2021 will be developed for a total of 140 kilometres. Below we see how the kilometres of the route are distributed across the municipalities it will pass through:
- Brescia: the cycle path in this municipality will extend for about 89 km, winding through the evocative localities of Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda and reaching Limone sul Garda. Along the route, the path will climb the rugged ridges of Valvestino, a challenging stretch that will be open to expert cyclists; for other tourists, convenient ferries will be provided;
- Trento: the path will cross the municipality of Trento for a total of 7 km, passing through the municipalities of Riva del Garda, Nago-Torbole and the municipality of Arco;
- Verona: in this province the pleasant nature itinerary extends for almost 70 km
- Mantova: finally, the path also crosses the municipality of Mantova along the municipalities of Peschiera del Garda and Pozzolengo, then leads to the end of the route at Lonato del Garda.
Garda by Bike: awaiting completion
The 2-kilometre section inaugurated on July 14 is added to the first section, 4 kilometres long, already inaugurated in 2013. So far, the first 6 kilometres are open to the public and can be walked or cycled. The next section of the path to be inaugurated will be the one between Riva and Limone, in the province of Trento.
Numerous broadcasters, including foreign ones, attended the inauguration of Garda By Bike, a project that has attracted much attention and curiosity also outside our country. Once completed, this project will significantly increase the tourist flow of the areas and municipalities the cycle path crosses.
